Stella Maris Beaches
Long Island is famous for beautiful beaches, our shores spectacular, offering bays and beaches west and east. Visits to our Bahamas island’s north, where Stella Maris Resort sits, invite wading, swimming, snorkeling, diving, sailing, kayaking, or just doing nothing at all; at the best of Long Island beaches. Enjoy the ocean view from your room or cottage. Take a dip in the Ocean Pool at our Bahamas beach resort. Wade in the tide pools. Bicycle to Deal's Beach for some sunfish sailing. Snorkel at Watermelon Beach. Enjoy the powder soft sand at Cape Santa Maria Beach. There are just a few choices that you'll find when you discover the beaches of Long Island.
In front of our Bahamas beach resort - Atlantic Coast: About 800' of outer rocks, providing for calms in shallow water and occasional 'nature-pools' within - then: Pretty coarse pink sand beach stretches with occasional rock plateaus that end at the north end in protected 'nature pool'. Cabanas, palm trees, plus one of the Resort Club's freshwater swimming pools (70' x 20'), with partially shaded sun terrace, chairs, etc., and "Moonshine Beach Bar".
700' North of hotel site - Atlantic Coast: 700' north of hotel site on the Atlantic coast an 800' long open cove of pink coarse sand allows bathing, swimming and snorkeling from the beach in calm weather. Not very suitable for small children.
South of our Bahamas beach resort (distance from 2000') - Atlantic Coast: The Rock Pools About 3/4 mile of open beach, with occasional outer rocks, with occasional rock plateaus, allowing bathing, swimming and snorkeling off the beach in calm weather. Pink coarse sand. Ending up (South) in 3 interconnecting 'natural rock pools' - great for children in calm weather. A pretty 'miniature' snorkeling site. South of our Bahamas beach resort (distance from 1 mile) - Atlantic Coast: The Love Beaches. The first one: A perfect, large, natural swimming pool, completely protected except in severe weather. Great for children all ages, with pretty 'miniature' snorkeling. Continuing south: 6 more beaches, average length each 1/3 - 1/2 mile, mostly open, with some partially protected coves, occasional outer rocks, all allowing bathing, swimming, and snorkeling off the beach in calm weather. Pink coarse sand. All great for beachcombing! Usually completely secluded. Stella Maris Resort Club guests enjoy FREE transport. Or about 4 minutes by bicycle.
South of Stella Maris - West Coast (leeside): Deal's Beach: About 8 minutes away along island's quiet main road (transportation provided by Resort Club). A beautiful 2 mile long shallow bay, great for beach walking, wading, swimming, 'trial snorkeling' (only small stuff), and sailing on the Resort Club's Sunfish type boats. Great for children all ages. B-B-Q, table, and benches. Pine trees provide lots of shade. Immediately West of Stella Maris: Adderley's Bay Along the north and the southwest shore, both smaller and longer beaches prevail. Calm, protected shallow water, superb bone fishing area. No schedules provided - great for 'explorers'. Northwest of Stella Maris: Cape Santa Maria Bay and Beach: One of the Resort Club's regularly featured beach/swimming/snorkeling sites. 20 Minutes by bus, unquestionably one of the most beautiful beaches of the world! Pure white-powdery sand. The bay faces towards the northwest and is mostly calm. Even in strong inland winds, it remains pretty, swimmable, and enjoyable! Outer reefs and coral heads off shore. Toward the western end of this 3 mile beach and bay, there are three snorkeling areas right off the beach: a mild shallow sea garden, shallow rock/low coral formations around the final western rock point, and "Rainbow Reef", a very pretty rock and coral reef, ideal for fair weather snorkeling.
North of our Bahamas beach resort - Atlantic Coast: Columbus Harbour & Columbus Monument: One of our featured beach/snorkeling/shelling excursion sites. 20 minutes by bus. 1 mile completely protected shallow inner bay beach, plus two further 1/2 mile outer beaches. Featuring outer coral heads and often good shelling. Superb snorkeling (fair weather required) from end of inner bay and off both outer bays. Inner bay great for children. Christopher Columbus rowed into this bay on his first New World voyage!
One of the regularly Resort Club's regularly featured beach/snorkeling/history excursion sites. 25 minutes by bus. High cliffs drop sharply to the north coast and to the inner bay and feature the Columbus Landing Monument and breathtaking views all around. A small beach below, inside the bay, offers superb snorkeling along the outer north shore in all but rough weather. Inner shallows are pretty and great for exploring. Enjoy body-drift tides! Great for children.
South of Stella Maris - West Coast (leeside): Millerton's School Beach: Transportation provided by Resort Club, about 5 minutes away. Secluded bay, lots of small shells, yellow/white soft sand, about 1 mile long. Cute, small island just 200 yards off shore, for very nice 'miniature' snorkeling - shallow water, great for children of all ages.
And lots of other beaches and bays - Northwest, West and East Beaches and bays with special features (snorkeling, shelling, the Blue Hole and more) are found all along the island's length, mostly accessible by good or fair roads. These include Salt Pond (East Coast for body surfing); Guana Cay (known for its curly tail Iguanas, with good snorkeling and a shallow wreck); the World's Deepest Blue Hole (right off the beach!); Turtle Cove (a beautiful, serene half-circle bay/nature pool); Clarencetown Harbour and Lochabar (superb scenery and beaches); Cabbage Beach (shelling). |
